Your storm must obey God
Yesterday, out of the bay window of my dining room, I saw a beautiful blanket of snow on the front lawn and smiled. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Snowfall turns me into a big kid every year. It’s pretty to look at, but I’ll admit, it can be dangerous to drive in. And when there’s too much snow and wind combined, conditions can quickly turn deadly.
The notorious blizzard of 1977 that hit Buffalo, Western NY, and Southern Ontario, dumped as much as 100 inches of snow, and those flurries were carried by wind gusts of up to 69 mph. It’s one of the worst storms in history and a reminder of how fierce and threatening a storm can be.
Sometimes, we face treacherous storms in our walk of faith, but we also serve a God who is able to calm them.
In Psalm 107:23-32, the psalmist praises God for doing this very thing when a massive storm arose on the deep seas. The winds were so strong, they stirred up the waves and tossed the ship up and down, back and forth. The sailors were cringing in terror, and they cried out to God for help. The Lord responded, and He calmed the storm to a whisper and brought the sailors to safety.
Interestingly, in verses 24-25, the psalmist describes the storm as “the Lord’s power in action” and “his impressive works.” He reveals that God spoke, and by His word, He created the storm. Yet, when it got to be too much, God calmed it. The same God who allowed the storm disallowed it. Nature responded to His voice, and He was never once out of control.
God was also in control on the Sea of Galilee when a violent storm arose, leaving the disciples in fear for their lives. When Jesus commanded the storm to cease, instantly, things went from chaotic to calm, astonishing the disciples and causing them to ask in Matthew 8:27, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”
That man was the Messiah, God wrapped in flesh, who said in Matthew 28:18, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
We serve this same Jesus who has all power and authority. Therefore, if you are facing a storm, whatever that storm is, it must obey the authority of His voice, and be subject to Him. When God commands the storm to stop, it has no choice but to cease.
The Roman centurion understood the authority of Christ in Matthew 8:8, so He asked Jesus to simply speak a word and command that his sick servant be healed. Jesus did, and immediately the man was made whole. That storm of sickness subsided.
What kind of storm are you facing? Is it in your health? Your finances? Your relationships? On your job? In your ministry? In your emotions? In your mind? Are you wrestling in your spirit?
Friend, this is God’s way of reminding you that He is greater than your storm, and He is yet in control. The winds cannot blow more forcefully than He allows. The waves can’t crash against you more violently than He allows. The storm cannot last longer than He allows. Nothing is allowed without His command. Again, your storm must obey Him.
To remind you that God’s word controls the outcome, I’m stirring the first portion of Hebrews 11:3 NLT into your cup of inspiration, which says, “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command…”
As you drink down the contents of your cup, remember, the same God who spoke the world into existence is speaking to your situation. Whatever He says has to happen.
You are just one divine command away from a breakthrough.
Now, let’s pray.
God, life’s storms feel intimidating and too intense to withstand, but thank You for reminding me that You are in control. Please speak a word of favor, breakthrough, and release over me, because I know my circumstances must be subject to Your word. Thank You for calming the storm and working this out for my good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you desire prayer, please allow me, along with my intercessory prayer team, to stand in faith with you for breakthrough. We would be so honored. We have seen God work over and over again. There is power in agreement. Click here to request prayer now.
As always, thanks for reading and until next time... may today's cup of inspiration uplift, encourage, and empower you!
