God is a covenant-keeper!
I bit into the reddest, plumpest, juiciest looking strawberry. As I prepared to savor the taste on my tongue, that anticipation quickly turned into disappointment. As tasty as the fruit appeared, it was one of the blandest, most tasteless strawberries I’d ever had! It literally had about as much flavor as a bottle of water.
I thought, are you kidding me?
I’d just munched on some delicious blackberries, my favorite kind of berries, and felt pleased as punch that they had the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. Yum! But those strawberries gave me nothing to work with, and it is for this exact reason that I cannot in good conscience add strawberries to my list of most loved berries.
Nope. Can’t do it. Won’t do it. They’re too inconsistent.
I have told the Hobbs children time and again that strawberries should be sued for false advertisement. The difference in their taste and appearance can be so drastic at times, it borders on criminal.
You know, for years and years, Daily Cup family, I wouldn’t even eat strawberries. Didn’t like them at all. Not one little bit. And now that my opinion of them has improved, at least enough to take them off my nasty list, I still can’t put strawberries on my trustworthy list.
Wow. That’s unfortunate. Am I being a little overdramatic? Well, probably so. But here’s the point: God is not a strawberry—er, a man—that He should lie. Ha!
Aren’t you glad about that, though? Personally, I’m super glad God doesn’t send out false signals and make promises He never intends to keep. God is consistent. His word is true. If He says He’s going to do something, He delivers, because God is a covenant-keeper. He always has been and forever will be.
In 2 Samuel 21, we see the importance of covenant-keeping after divine judgment rained down on Israel and held up the natural rain all because of something King Saul failed to do.
Friend, he failed to honor a covenant of peace the Israelites had entered with the Gibeonites under the leadership of Joshua (See Joshua 9-10). Even though Saul was dead, and David was now king, the Lord looked upon Saul’s lack of integrity with disdain and sent a three-year famine.
Therefore, to right this wrong, there was something David had to do and that was to avenge the Gibeonites by fulfilling a specific request: hand over seven of Saul’s relatives for public hanging.
Whoa. Harsh, I know. But, for the Gibeonites, this was fair retribution, and David obliged them.
And after he honored the treaty, God was pleased with David’s act of integrity and confirmed His pleasure by opening the heavens and sending forth rain on earth!
This shows how high promise-keeping sits on God’s agenda. It also serves as a demonstration of why we can be confident that the Lord, who never changes, is still a keeper of His covenant. And that’s great news for us, because He promises to take care of us, to provide for our needs, to heal us, and to give us all the blessings and benefits that come with redemption.
Whether the situation looks promising or not, you can trust God, the covenant-keeper, to keep His word to you in all seasons.
Thus, Numbers 23:19 KJV, which I alluded to earlier, is what I’m stirring into today’s cup of inspiration. It says, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”
As you drink down the contents of your cup, know that you can count on the Lord in every situation. He is faithful and true and will never fail to honor the covenant of His word.
Now, let’s pray.
God, thank You for being a trustworthy covenant-keeper. I believe every promise and declare by faith that because You said it, it is already done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
