The other side of change
I just finished reading a simple yet powerful book, Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson and Kenneth Blanchard. I first read it about 20 years ago, but the Lord put it on my heart to revisit it, so I obeyed.
And boy was it timely!
As I absorbed the content of each page, the deeper I got into the story, the more I understood why God wanted to reiterate those lessons in this season.
The book is all about change, how we respond to it, and the necessity of being flexible and willing to transition – whether the changes come by choice or force.
A lot of change in my life has been by force over the past three years. Clearly, I didn’t ask for a brain injury and a new personality, right?
Because I was forced into change, I resisted it for a long time. I sulked and grieved and hoped things would go back to the way they were. It took a while for me to realize and accept that life would be forever different.
You should have seen me pout like a two-year-old throwing a tantrum. I folded my arms, cried, and put up a big old fuss. I liked things the way they were, you know? I felt more sure, confident and clear about what I was doing, where I was going, and how I would get there.
But now I see that through this huge transition – which God has taken me through kicking and screaming – my faith has grown stronger. I am more submissive to God’s will and less upset about not getting my way. I have matured and I am thankful.
Nowadays, when I read about Abraham in Genesis 12, I deeply relate.
God told him to leave everything familiar with no idea where he’d end up. As absurd as that sounded, Abraham gave God a yes, became the Father of faith, and laid the foundation necessary for us to attain righteousness through faith in Christ. “And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith” (Genesis 15:6 NLT).
Friend, God wants you to believe Him through it all. Even when you walk down dark roads in uncharted territory, lean on Him, believe His word, and keep going despite not always having clear direction.
Will you ever feel fearful, worried, discouraged, alone, and confused? Of course, you will, but those are only feelings. Though it gets hard sometimes, I know this one thing to be true: if you put your trust in Jesus, everything will be alright.
He’ll lead and guide you, protect and preserve you, comfort and care for you, favor and bless you, reward and compensate you.
To help you choose faith over feelings, I’m stirring a portion of Romans 1:17 into your cup of inspiration, which says, “The just shall live by faith.”
As you drink down the contents of your cup, cling to faith as never before, and watch God lead you through your wilderness into your Promised Land.
Good things await and come to those that dare to trust in God. Today, I am experiencing so many good things that I never thought possible; they were all on the other side of change.
Lord, change is hard, especially when it is forced. But through every life transition – even the most uncomfortable ones – teach me to lean on You and trust that You will carry me through dark days and lead me to better ones. Thank You in advance for the good things waiting for me as I place full confidence in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
