C'est la vie (That's life!)

My hubby, Kenya, is getting a root canal this afternoon.

Poor guy just had a root canal on a different tooth about a year or two ago, and the process was quite uncomfortable for him. We were just talking this week about how his teeth have gone through so many painful changes, yet I’ve never had a cavity. On the flip side, my body has been through major crises, while he, by the grace of God, has not faced any serious medical issues.

We’re the opposite of each other in that way, but something we can both relate to is how life constantly presents challenges to overcome—some big, some small. When one thing gets regulated, something else goes haywire. No sooner than you breathe a sigh of relief, you end up releasing a sigh of exasperation over a new thing going wrong.

C'est la vie, right?

That’s the popular French saying for "That's life." English speakers borrowed this expression in the 1880’s, and it’s now our simple way of saying, "Oh well." We just accept that, hey, that’s the way things are sometimes.

Trouble comes knocking at all our doors, and to that we say, C'est la vie. Times get hard. C'est la vie. We go through rough patches. C'est la vie.

Child, that’s life.

But here’s the thing. Though Jesus told us that none of us in this world gets to escape trouble (John 16:33), we can remain confident that the power of God is working in us. The Holy Spirit is consistently strengthening us to deal with life’s challenges head on. Whether those issues be major or minor, with God on our side, we will come through every battle victoriously. We are resilient overcomers, more than conquerors through Christ (Romans 8:37).

This makes me think about 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (CEV) which I read this morning, and I love what it says: “We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up. In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again.”

Oh, that’s a good word!

God said, you are getting up from here. You will not stay down. This will not destroy you. He has a plan for your comeback!

We may get knocked down from time to time. C'est la vie. But what we won’t do is stay down! We will rise again. And not only that, but we will also come back stronger, better, more blessed and favored than before.

So, friend, if you’re going through some troubles today, you’re not the only one. Many believers are. That’s life. But the good news is that trouble don’t last always!

2 Corinthians 4:17 (CEV)—which is what I’m stirring into your cup of inspiration—says this: “These little troubles are getting us ready for an eternal glory that will make all our troubles seem like nothing.”

As you drink down the contents of your cup, I want you to declare over your life, “This trouble is nothing compared to the blessing I’m about to receive.”

Good things are coming, not just in the hereafter but also in this present life.

Again, none of us can change that life is and will always be full of ups and downs, ebbs and flows, good days and bad ones. Be that as it may, the prevalence of trouble is no match for the presence of God.

And God’s word says that many are the afflictions of the righteous—C'est la vie!—but the Lord will deliver us out of them all (Psalm 34:19).

We accept that there will be difficulty, but we don’t accept defeat because Christ always causes us to triumph.

Now, let’s pray.

God, thank You for being my Rock in a hard place. You keep me stable and rescue me from all my troubles and afflictions. Though I cannot change that life brings with it unpleasant issues, I praise You that You are an unchanging God who will forever and always be a present help in trouble and a mighty deliverer for Whom nothing is impossible! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
