It’s already in you
One of my sisters just went natural. She did a big chop, meaning she cut out all of the relaxed strands, leaving only the texture that naturally grows out of her scalp. She went to her barber for a trim and was excited about the change, but she could not figure out what products to put in her hair.
It was dry, and she wasn’t very happy about that. Being that I went natural some time ago and know more about natural haircare than she does, she asked me to help her out, and I was happy to do it. I brought my oils and other products to her house, and I massaged them into her hair. Once moisturized, her hair responded by shining and curling up, and she loved it.
“I didn’t know my hair was curly,” she said. “I always wanted my hair like this.”
I told her, with natural hair, you need the right products to bring out your natural texture and keep your hair from being dry. It was nice to see her happy and pleased with her new haircut and curls. She looks beautiful.
Just as my sister was unaware of what her hair texture would do before I put the right products in it, we are often unaware of what we are able to do until the right conditions bring out what’s already in us.
When we meet Hannah, the barren wife of Elkanah in 1 Samuel 1, she is frustrated, depressed, and pitiful. Her inability to have children had made her sad, and it didn’t help that Elkanah’s other wife Peninnah, who churned out babies with no problem, teased and taunted Hannah for sport.
Year after year, Hannah let Penninah get inside her head, irritate her, make her stop eating, and sulk. But one day, Hannah did something different. She went into the temple and wept before the Lord, and she prayed to Him. Her prayer got God’s attention, and the Lord opened Hannah’s womb and blessed her with a son named Samuel.
Before Hannah pressed her way to the house of God and prayed that circumstance-shifting prayer, she was already a prayer warrior. All along, she had the ability to petition God and see His power. It was already in her, but Hannah needed Peninnah to vex her enough to push her into her purpose.
Friend, sometimes, the things that most irritate, upset, sadden, and hurt you, are the very things God uses to pull out your gifts, anointing, ability, faith, and courage.
In Hebrew, Hannah’s name means grace and favor. She already had the grace of God on her life and was already favored of the Lord. However, she didn’t tap into that favor until she was pushed to her limit, tested beyond what she thought she could take, and wounded deeply by her rival.
Hannah didn’t know that the key to entering her fruitful season was tapping into the prayer warrior within. She didn’t realize the level of favor on her life or know that God had chosen her to give birth to one of the greatest prophets in biblical history.
You know what? The Lord has chosen you to give birth to something great too. That’s why He has allowed you to be uncomfortable, and He has stretched you. He let the enemy vex you and irritate you, because God knows that vexation and attacks will pull out the gifts and treasures lying dormant within.
What you need in order to overcome this challenge and to combat the attacks and lies of the enemy is already in you.
To remind you of this truth, I’m stirring 1 John 4:4 NKJV into your cup of inspiration, which says, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
As you drink down the contents of your cup begin thanking God, because what seems to be working against you is really working for you. God allowed it to happen to pull out of you what’s already in you—and it’s exactly what you need to do, be, and have everything God has predestined for you.
2 Peter 1:3 NLT says, “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.”
Now let’s pray.
God, some things are out of order in my life, and it feels frustrating. Thank You for this word and for reminding me that sometimes, what feels the worst to me is really the best for me. In the end, I believe this uncomfortable situation will only serve to reveal all the hidden treasures that already exist within me to be all You have called and anointed me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
