Expect Jehovah Jireh to show up
My husband Kenya and I married young and struggled financially for years. I remember one day in particular, funds were low, and we didn’t know how we were going to buy groceries to feed our family.
We walked around the grocery store trying to figure out how to stretch the tiny bit of cash we had. We had filled our cart with essential items, but after calculating the cost, we were over budget. We had to remove things from the cart and return them to the store shelves. We simply could not afford what we needed that day. It looked like we would have to go hungry.
As we stood in one of the aisles deliberating, someone we knew walked over to us and said, “God told me to pay for your grocery items today. Get whatever you need, and I’ll take care of it.”
Kenya and I were floored and so grateful. God saw our need and met it on the spot. All these years later, gratitude fills me up each time I reminisce about that day. It confirms for me that God is mindful of our needs and will take care of us. Even though experiencing financial lack was uncomfortable, I’m thankful for that season. It taught me that God is my source and a faithful provider.
Abraham experienced supernatural provision when God challenged him to offer his son Isaac as a burnt offering in Genesis 22. As Abraham and Isaac walked toward Mount Moriah, Isaac asked his father, “Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
Abraham answered Isaac and said, “God himself will provide.”
I love the response of Abraham! Though he didn’t know exactly what God would do or how the Lord would send provision, Abraham was confident that God would do it. Sure enough, God caused a ram to get caught by its horns in the thicket. Abraham sacrificed the ram instead of his own son and called the place where it happened “Jehovah Jireh,” which means, “The Lord will provide.”
In the New Testament, the Lord provided again. He sent Jesus Christ, a substitutionary atonement, to pay the penalty for our sins. As the ram took Isaac’s place in the Old Testament, Jesus took our place in the New Testament. He gave Himself up to die in our place so that we can have eternal life through Him.
Isn’t that awesome?
All throughout biblical history, God has provided for His people and still provides today. I don’t know what you need, but I do know that Jehovah Jireh is available to you. His hand is outstretched, and He is willing to be whatever you need. He will be your sustainer and keeper. Your healer and deliverer. Your refuge and conqueror. Your comforter and restorer. Your peace and joy. Your defender and advocate.
If you have been feeling any sort of stress, pressure and concern lately, declare to yourself what Abraham said to his son Isaac in Genesis 22:8—which is what I’m stirring into your cup of inspiration—“God himself will provide.”
As you drink down the contents of your cup, remain confident in God’s power, provision and faithfulness. Know that He will anticipate and supply every need, big or small. Whatever you’re facing right now, expect Jehovah Jireh to show up for you.
Now, let’s pray.
God, thank You for reminding me that You already know what I need, and You will provide for me. Help me remain confident in Your word despite what I go through, for You have never failed me yet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
